YOUR QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
Self Storage FAQs
Got questions about storage? You are in the right place.
Whether you are moving home, clearing space, storing business stock or just trying to get the spare room back, these FAQs cover the big stuff: costs, access, security, contracts, packing, insurance and what you can store.
If you are still not sure what you need, the LOOK team is always happy to help. No confusing storage jargon. No pressure to take a bigger unit than you need. Just friendly advice and a sensible storage solution.
Getting started
Self storage gives you your own secure space to store belongings outside your home or business. You choose the unit size, move your items in, lock your unit, and access your things when you need them during the site’s access hours.
It works a bit like having an extra room, garage or stockroom, but without it taking over your actual home or workplace. You can use storage for a short time while moving, decorating or travelling, or for longer-term needs like business stock, archive boxes or seasonal items.
At LOOK, we help you choose the right space for what you are storing, then get you set up with everything you need to move in. Simple, secure and much less stressful than trying to fit a sofa into a shed.
The best place to start is with a quick list of what you want to store. Think about your biggest items first, such as sofas, beds, wardrobes, appliances, bikes, tools or stock, then add your boxes and smaller belongings.
If you only have a few boxes, suitcases or seasonal items, a smaller unit or locker may be enough. If you are storing furniture from a room, flat or house, you will usually need more space. Businesses may also want extra room for access, shelving or stock rotation.
The LOOK team can help you work this out. Tell us what you are storing and we will recommend a sensible size, so you are not paying for space you do not need. We are very much on team “right size”, not team “upsell you into a storage palace”!
Self storage costs depend on the size of unit you choose, the location, how long you need storage for, and the type of storage that suits your items. A compact unit for boxes will cost less than a larger unit for furniture, business stock or equipment.
The easiest way to get an accurate price is to request a quote. Once we know what you are storing and roughly how long for, we can help match you to the right unit and give you clear pricing.
We will also explain what is included before you move in, so you know what to expect. No mysterious storage maths. No nasty surprises hiding behind the boxes.
Yes, LOOK often runs introductory offers or discounts for new customers. These can change by location, unit type and availability, so it is always worth asking what is currently available when you enquire.
Promotional offers may come with specific terms, such as an initial rental period, so we will explain the details clearly before you commit. That way, you can choose the option that works best for your budget, timeline and storage needs.
In many cases, same-day storage is possible, subject to availability and completing the setup process. If we have the right unit available and everything is arranged, you may be able to move in very quickly.
This is especially handy if your moving date changes, your renovation suddenly starts, or your spare room has finally staged a protest. The best thing to do is contact your nearest LOOK site and tell us what you need to store. We will let you know what is available and how soon you can get started.
Booking ahead is the best way to secure the right unit size. Storage availability can change, especially during busy moving periods, student season or when popular unit sizes are in demand.
If you are not sure what size you need, contacting us first is also helpful because we can guide you before you arrive. Our sites are not manned 7 days a week so it's always best to call first and make an appointment to view our units.
Access and opening hours
LOOK’s standard access hours are 7am to 9pm, seven days per week, giving you a good window to visit your unit before or after work, around moving days, or when you suddenly remember the Christmas decorations are in storage.
Office hours may vary by location, so it is worth checking with your chosen site if you need to speak to the team in person. Access hours and staffed office hours are not always the same thing, and we can explain exactly how it works when you book.
Yes, you can access your unit during LOOK’s standard access hours of 7am to 9pm, even if the office itself is not staffed for that full period. This gives you flexibility without needing to fit everything into typical office opening times.
Access arrangements can vary slightly by site or storage type, so the team will confirm the details when you move in. If you know you will need regular early morning or evening access, mention this when enquiring and we will talk you through the best option.
You can access your storage unit as often as you need during out standard access hours. Some customers visit once at move-in and once at move-out. Others pop in regularly to collect stock, swap seasonal items, or gradually sort through belongings.
There is no need to book a visit each time for normal access. If you are going to be loading a lot, using large vehicles or arranging help, it can be useful to speak to the team so everything runs smoothly.
Yes, you can arrange for someone else to access your unit if you choose to allow it. You stay in control of who has access, and it is important that any arrangements are set up properly.
This is useful if a family member, friend, colleague, mover or team member needs to collect or drop off items. Speak to the LOOK team before arranging this so we can advise the safest and simplest way to manage access.
Safety and security
Security is a big part of self storage, and LOOK sites are designed to help keep your belongings protected. Our facilities include measures such as gated access, controlled entry systems, CCTV and secure individual units.
Your storage unit is your own space, and you control access to it. That means your belongings are stored privately, and only authorised people should be able to enter your unit.
We know storage often includes things that matter, from furniture and family belongings to stock, tools and documents. So we take security seriously, while keeping the whole process straightforward.
LOOK sites use CCTV and secure access systems to help monitor and protect the facility and the belongings of our customers.
Specific alarm arrangements may differ depending on the site and unit type, so if you have a particular security question, please ask the team at your chosen location. We will always explain the security features clearly before you move in.
LOOK offers indoor storage units at our sites in Bournemouth and Ferndown, designed to keep belongings protected from the weather. Internal storage is a great option for furniture, boxes, documents, electronics and household items that benefit from being stored inside.
Our storage containers at our sites in Bournemouth and Poole are also well protected from damp.
As with any storage, good packing still matters. Items should be clean and dry before they go into the unit, and furniture or soft furnishings should be properly covered. If you are storing anything sensitive, the team can advise on the best unit type and packing approach.
Fire safety is taken incredibly seriously across LOOK facilities, and safety systems are in place to help protect the site and customers’ belongings.
If you need specific details about fire detection, smoke alarms or safety procedures at a particular site, contact the team. They will be able to confirm everything and answer any questions before you move in.
Contracts and payments
No, you do not need to sign a long-term commercial-style contract. LOOK self-storage is designed to be flexible, so you can store for the length of time that suits your needs.
Some promotional offers may include an initial minimum term, so it is always worth checking the details when you enquire. We will explain the contract clearly before you commit, so there is no awkward small print ambush!
The minimum rental period can depend on the storage type, location and any offer you choose. For example, some introductory promotions may require an initial rental period to qualify for the discounted rate.
If you only need storage for a short time, tell us your dates and we will advise on the most suitable option. Whether it is a few weeks, a few months or longer, the aim is to make storage work around your plans.
Notice periods can vary depending on your agreement and any offer you have taken. In many cases, once the initial term has passed, a notice period applies before you move out.
The LOOK team will explain this clearly when you set up your storage, so you know what to do when the time comes. If your plans change, just let us know and we will talk you through your options.
Payments are taken four-weekly in advance, which keeps things simple and predictable. The exact payment setup can vary by site, but the team will explain what is required when you book.
Many customers choose an automatic payment method so they do not have to remember it every month. Very sensible. Future-you will approve.
If you need invoices for business storage, ask the team when setting up your account.
A deposit may be required depending on the storage arrangement, location or unit type. The team will confirm this when providing your quote and setting up your booking.
If a deposit applies, we will explain how it works, what it covers and when it may be returned. The key thing is that you will know before you commit.
LOOK aims to keep storage pricing clear and straightforward. If there are any setup fees, deposits, insurance requirements or other costs linked to your storage, we will explain them before you move in.
Nobody enjoys a hidden fee. Not you, not us, not anyone. So if you have any questions about your quote, just ask and we will talk you through it clearly.
What you can store
You can store most household and business items, including furniture, boxes, clothes, books, tools, sports equipment, business stock, office furniture, archive files, seasonal items and appliances.
A good rule of thumb is that if it is safe, dry, legal and suitable to keep in a home, office or stockroom, it is usually suitable for storage. There are some restrictions, particularly around food, flammable items and hazardous materials, so ask the team if you are unsure.
Yes, furniture and appliances are commonly stored at LOOK. Sofas, beds, tables, chairs, wardrobes, cabinets, mattresses, washing machines, fridges and other household items can usually be stored, provided they are clean, dry and suitable for storage.
For appliances, make sure they are emptied, cleaned and completely dry before storing. Fridge and freezer doors should be left slightly open where possible to prevent odours. For furniture, covers and careful stacking will help keep everything protected.
Bicycles can usually be stored and are a popular storage item, especially for students, sports enthusiasts and anyone short on garage space.
Motorbike storage may be possible depending on the location, unit type and site rules. Because motorbikes can involve fuel, batteries and other safety considerations, you should speak to the LOOK team before bringing one in. We will confirm what is allowed and how it needs to be prepared.
Yes, self storage is a great option for business stock, tools, equipment, office furniture, promotional materials, packaging and supplies. It is useful for businesses that need extra space without committing to a warehouse or bigger premises.
You can use storage for seasonal stock, ecommerce overflow, trade equipment, archive records or supplies you do not need in your workspace every day. If you are storing stock that has special requirements, check with the team first.
Yes, documents and archive boxes can be stored in a unit. Many businesses use self storage to free up office space while still keeping records accessible when needed.
For best results, use strong archive boxes, label them clearly and keep an inventory list. If documents are confidential, make sure they are packed securely and access is limited to authorised people only.
Yes, seasonal items are perfect for storage. Christmas decorations, sports gear, camping equipment, garden furniture, winter clothing, summer accessories, hobby items and event decorations can all be stored when they are out of season.
Storage helps keep your home, garage or office clear while still keeping those items ready for when their moment comes around again. Because the inflatable reindeer does not need to live in the hallway all year.
What you can't store
You cannot store items that are dangerous, illegal, perishable, flammable or likely to cause damage, smells, leaks or pests. This includes hazardous materials, gas canisters, fuel, explosives, illegal goods, live animals, plants, food and anything wet or rotting.
Storage units are for safe household, personal and business items. If you are unsure about something, ask before bringing it to site. We would much rather answer a quick question than have you unload something that cannot be stored.
No, perishable food should not be stored. Food can attract pests, create smells and spoil over time, which is not good for your unit or anyone else’s.
Sealed, non-perishable items may still be restricted depending on the type and site rules, so check with the team if food-related items are part of what you want to store. As a general rule, storage is not the place for anything that could go off, leak or attract unwanted visitors.
No. Flammable liquids, gas canisters, hazardous materials, explosives and dangerous substances are not allowed in storage. This includes petrol, diesel, paint thinner, certain chemicals, fireworks and similar items.
These restrictions are in place for everyone’s safety. If you are storing tools, equipment or vehicles and are unsure about fuel, batteries or chemicals, please speak to the team before moving in.
Fuel and hazardous chemicals are not allowed. Batteries may be restricted depending on the type, condition and what they are attached to, so it is important to check before storing them.
If you are storing equipment, tools, bikes, appliances or anything battery-powered, ask the LOOK team for guidance. We will help you understand what is safe and what needs to be removed or prepared differently before storage.
Insurance and protection
You may arrange insurance yourself, through an insurer of your choice. However, it's important you check that:
- The policy explicitly covers items kept in storage
- Cover lasts for the full duration of your storage rental, as some policies are limited to 30 to 90 days
- Business or commercial stock is included if you are storing items for business use
- Any conditions set by the insurer are met, such as security requirements at the storage facility
Not all home contents policies cover items kept in self storage, so it is essential to confirm this before you rely on your existing insurance.
Alternatively, you can take out our own simple protection through StoreProtect.
StoreProtect is available as an alternative to arranging your own insurance and provides cover for loss or damage up to your chosen maximum replacement value.
Full details, limits, exclusions, and terms are available from the LOOK team.
StoreProtect is available as an alternative to arranging your own insurance and provides cover for loss or damage up to your chosen maximum replacement value.
Full details, limits, exclusions, and terms are available from the LOOK team.
Start by making a simple list of what you are storing, then estimate the replacement value of each item. Think about what it would cost to replace the items today, not what you paid years ago.
Include furniture, appliances, electronics, tools, stock, documents, sports equipment and boxes of smaller items. It is easy to underestimate the value of a unit once lots of small belongings are packed away, so take your time and keep the list updated if you add more items later.
Moving in and packing
While we don't sell packing materials directly at LOOK self-storage, the team will be able to recommend good, reliable, local suppliers should you require anything to safely pack away your belongings.
Trolleys are available at all LOOK self-storage facilities, with a lift also available at LOOK Ferndown.
When booking, ask the team what facilities are available at your chosen location. We will help you understand the easiest way to move your items in, especially if you have heavy furniture, lots of boxes or business stock.
LOOK may be able to recommend local removals companies or transport options depending on your location and what you need to move. We do not want you trying to balance a wardrobe on a hatchback. Nobody needs that kind of stress!
Speak to the team when booking and let us know whether you need help with a house move, student move, business stock or bulky furniture. We can point you in the right direction where possible.
Loading and unloading help may depend on the site and what you are moving. LOOK can advise on the facilities available, such as parking, trolleys, loading areas and local removal recommendations.
If you know you will need assistance, tell the team in advance. That gives us the best chance of helping you plan a smooth move-in without last-minute chaos in the car park!
Use strong boxes, avoid overpacking them, and label everything clearly. Put heavier items at the bottom, lighter or fragile items on top, and keep anything you may need soon near the front of the unit.
Make sure items are clean and dry before storing. Wrap fragile belongings, protect furniture corners, and keep cables, screws and small parts in labelled bags. A little organisation at move-in saves a lot of rummaging later.
Clean and dry furniture before storing it, then use suitable covers, blankets or breathable protection to help prevent dust and scuffs. Avoid placing heavy items on soft furnishings or delicate surfaces.
Mattresses should be stored clean, dry and covered. If possible, use a mattress bag and avoid bending or folding it, unless the manufacturer says it is safe to do so. Store furniture in a way that keeps weight balanced and leaves access if you need to retrieve items later.
Changing units and flexibility
Yes, subject to availability. If you realise you need more space, or you have cleared some items and want a smaller unit, speak to the LOOK team and we will explain your options.
This is one of the benefits of flexible storage. Your storage needs can change, and where possible, your unit can change with them.
Switching between LOOK locations may be possible depending on availability at your preferred site. For example, you may want to move from one location to another if you move house, change workplace or need a different type of storage.
Speak to the team and we will check what is available at Bournemouth, Poole or Ferndown. You would usually need to arrange the transport of your items between sites, but we can advise on the process.
That is usually no problem. Many people need storage for longer than expected because moving dates change, renovations run over, business stock grows, or life does what life does.
If you need extra time, contact the team as soon as you know. In most cases, extending your storage is straightforward, and we will explain any payment or notice details.
Business storage
No, storage units are not designed to be used as a registered business address, trading address or office address.
They are for storing business items such as stock, tools, records, furniture, equipment and supplies. If you need business address services, you should use a proper office, virtual office or registered address provider.
Your LOOK unit can still be a very useful storage base, just not your official business HQ.
Delivery arrangements can vary by site, so you should speak to the LOOK team before sending anything to the facility. Some deliveries may be possible by arrangement, but they need to be handled properly and safely.
If you run an ecommerce business or receive stock deliveries, tell us how you plan to use the unit. We can explain what is possible at your chosen location and help you avoid missed deliveries or confused couriers wandering around with a box of mystery stock.
Yes, self storage can be a great solution for ecommerce sellers and businesses that need stock space. It is useful for product inventory, packaging materials, seasonal stock, returns, promotional items and business supplies.
It gives you extra room without committing to a warehouse lease, which makes it ideal for start-ups, side hustles and growing online businesses. If you need frequent access, the team can help you choose a practical unit size and layout.
Vehicles and large items
Vehicle storage may be available depending on the site, vehicle type and current availability. Because vehicles can involve additional safety considerations, such as fuel, batteries and access requirements, you should speak to the team before booking.
If you need to store a vehicle, tell us what it is, how long you need storage for, and whether it will need regular access. We will confirm what options may be suitable.
Trailers or small boats may be possible at some locations, depending on size, storage type and availability. These items need to be discussed with the team before arrival so we can check whether the site can accommodate them safely.
If you are storing a trailer, boat or similar large item, make sure you have dimensions ready when you enquire. That helps us work out the right option without any awkward measuring in the car park.
Location and facilities
Yes, LOOK sites have parking available to make loading and unloading easier. Parking arrangements can vary by location, so the team will explain where to park and how to access your unit when you move in.
If you are bringing a van, large vehicle or several loads, mention this in advance so we can help you plan the easiest way to unload.
Unit locations depend on the site and the unit type you choose. Some units are on the ground floor, while others may be on upper floors with access arrangements in place.
If ground floor access is important, tell the team when enquiring. We can check availability and recommend the best option for what you are storing.
Drive-up access is available for our storage containers at LOOK Poole and LOOK Ferndown. Loading facilities vary by site, but LOOK locations are designed to make move-in and move-out as straightforward as possible.
If easy loading is a priority, tell us what you are moving and how often you need access. We will help you choose the most practical storage option.
Support
You can get a quote by contacting LOOK online, by phone, email or WhatsApp. Tell us your preferred location, what you want to store, and roughly how long you need storage for.
If you know the unit size you want, great. If not, no problem. We can help work that out and provide a quote based on the best fit for your items.
That is exactly what the LOOK team is here for. Just tell us what you are storing, whether you need regular access, and whether anything is especially large, heavy or delicate – and don't forget to take a look at our online size guide!
We will recommend a unit size and storage type that makes sense. No guesswork, no pressure and no paying for a ballroom when you only need a cupboard!
