YOUR QUESTIONS, OUR ANSWERS
Frequently asked questions about personal storage
Personal storage is a secure space you rent to store household belongings you do not need every day. It's a simple way to create breathing room at home without having to throw things out or squeeze everything into cupboards.
People use personal storage for all sorts of reasons, from short-term situations like moving or renovating to longer-term needs like travelling, downsizing, or storing sentimental items safely.
Personal storage is useful when life feels a bit in-between. If you are moving home, waiting for dates to line up, or renovating and need rooms cleared, a storage unit keeps your belongings protected while you get things sorted.
It is also great for decluttering, life changes, or simply reclaiming space at home. Store what you want to keep, take your time deciding what stays, and bring things back only when you actually need them.
The units can look similar, but the purpose is different. Personal storage is typically used for household items like furniture, boxes, clothes, sports equipment, and seasonal belongings, while business storage is more often used for stock, tools, equipment, and records.
If you are storing items mainly for home life, it counts as personal storage. If the items are for work, trade, or business operations, business storage usually makes more sense, and the team can guide you either way.
It depends on what you are storing and how you plan to pack it. A small unit can hold boxes, suitcases, and a few smaller items, while larger units or storage containers are better for furniture, white goods, or a house move.
The easiest way is to make a quick list of your big items first, then estimate boxes. Check out our size guide, but if you are unsure, the team can recommend a sensible size so you do not end up paying for empty space.
Yes, subject to availability. If you start small and then realise you need more room, you can usually move to a larger unit. If you clear things out and want to reduce your space, downsizing is also an option.
It is best to speak to the team as soon as you think your needs are changing. They can advise what is available and the easiest way to switch.
Most everyday household belongings are suitable, including furniture, boxes, clothes, books, toys, sports gear, and seasonal items. People also store paperwork, hobby equipment, and sentimental items they want to keep safe.
If you can keep it safely in a home environment, it is usually suitable for personal storage. If you are unsure about something specific, the team can confirm before you move in.
There are certain things you're not allowed to store in LOOK units, including:
(a) food or perishable goods unless securely packed so they are protected from and do not attract vermin;
(b) any living creatures;
(c) combustible or flammable substances such as gas, paint, petrol, oil, cleaning solvents or compressed gases;
(d) firearms, explosives, weapons or ammunition;
(e) chemicals, radioactive materials, biological agents; toxic waste, asbestos or other potentially hazardous substances;
(f) any item that emits fumes, or odours;
(g) any illegal item or substances or goods illegally obtained such as illicit (counterfeit/smuggled) tobacco or alcohol and unlicensed or unsafe goods (such as toys, electrical goods, medicines, aerosols, cosmetics, fireworks);
(h) goods which are environmentally harmful or that are a risk to the property of any person;
(i) items which are irreplaceable, which may include, currency, jewellery, furs, deeds, paintings, curios, works of art and items of personal sentimental value.
Start by choosing your location, unit size and requesting a quote. If you're unsure of the best location or unit size you need, the team are on hand to help.
When you are ready, they will confirm your details, arrange the paperwork, and get you set up for move-in. If you want guidance at any stage, you can speak to a real person who will walk you through it.
LOOK sites are designed with security in mind, with features such as CCTV and controlled access. Storage should feel reassuring, not worrying, and the security measures are there to help protect your belongings.
Your unit is also locked individually and only you have the key. That means access stays in your control, and your belongings remain private.
Our standard access hours are between 7am and 9pm.
Personal storage is designed to be convenient, though, so if you do need to access your personal storage unit outside of these hours, let us know and we'll do our best to help.
A heavy duty lock and key is provided as part of your setup so you can secure your unit immediately. You keep the key, which keeps access firmly in your hands.
If you already have a lock or have specific requirements, ask the team and they will confirm what is compatible.
The cost depends mainly on the unit size you choose and how long you need storage for. Smaller units for boxes and a few items cost less than larger spaces used for furniture or full house contents.
The best way to get a clear price is to request a quote and share what you are storing. The team can then help you choose the right size so you are not paying for unused space.
Yes. Personal storage is designed to fit around real life, so flexible options are available for both short-term and long-term storage needs.
If you take an introductory offer, there may be an initial minimum period linked to that deal. After that, storage remains flexible and easy to manage.
LOOK aims to keep pricing straightforward. Your quote should clearly outline what is included, and the team will explain anything important before you commit.
If you are unsure about what is included at a specific location, ask the team and they will confirm it clearly.
Pack items in strong boxes, label everything clearly, and stack heavier boxes at the bottom. Protect furniture with covers or blankets and make sure items are clean and dry before storing.
If you want easy access later, leave a small walkway and keep the things you might need sooner near the front. A little planning makes storage much easier when you come back to it.
Yes. Seasonal storage is one of the most common reasons people use personal storage. Store skis, surfboards, bikes, Christmas decorations, summer furniture, and all the bits that take over cupboards and lofts.
It is an easy way to keep your home clear while still keeping seasonal items safe and ready for when you need them.
Yes, if you choose to allow it. You stay in control of who can access your unit, and the team can advise the best way to set this up properly.
If you are arranging someone to help with collections or deliveries, it is worth letting the team know so access is handled smoothly.
